Flash Mob n. A large group of people who gather in a usually predetermined location, perform some brief action, and then quickly disperses.

Georgia Life Science Flesh Mob n. A large group of people in the life science industry who gather at a conveniently located BBQ joint, that serves beer, for the purpose of helping each other find jobs and start companies, and then eventually disperses.

I created the GA Life Science Farm Team, Bullpen and Veterans virtual groups on Linkedin and Facebook to help people from business, law and science find employment opportunities across the state. As more people have joined, I started to think that we could advance the human condition more quickly if these people could actually meet on a regular basis.

When I described my idea about an informal gathering of people in the life science industry, my Logistics counterpart Page Siplon introduced me to the term flash mob. I liked the term but I thought it would be funnier if we called it a flesh mob, since I plan to hold them at places where meat is served. Yes I googled “flesh mob” and I know that the term has been applied to gaggles of strippers, streakers and zombie ghouls. Whatever…

As barbeque and beer are two of nature’s most nearly perfect foods and foundational cornerstones of Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs, I thought there would be no better place to nurture creativity and connection than at a BBQ joint. Besides, Georgia has a bunch of them so the Flesh Mob concept can be easily reproduced across the state.

The first few Flesh Mobs will occur at 5th Street Ribs and Blues www.ribsnblues.com (twitter hash tag #fsrb) in the middle of Tech Square. The next one is on June 9th from 5:30 to 7ish. I chose this place because:

The Flesh Mobs are intended to be noisy, unstructured and rough around the edges. We want business cards exchanged. Hopefully more than a few napkins will go home with rudimentary business plans written on them.

Blue jeans, sweat suits and collarless shirts are welcomed and encouraged at the Flesh Mob. People from the fields of business, law and science are invited to attend. Come if you are interested in pharma, medical devices, health IT or anything else that advances the human condition. There is no registration process, fee or sponsorship opportunity. I may remember to bring some nametags and markers. The option to purchase beer or food is totally at the attendee’s discretion. There is no age limit or preferred demographic.

If you are looking for a job or to fill a position (recruiters welcome) or to create a management team for commercializing a new technology or to just be where all the cool kids hang out, the Flesh Mob is for you. Come hungry.
